What’s the problem with chemical deodorants anyway?

Why you should ditch chemical deodorants.

I have to say… It took me a long time to convert to natural deodorants.  Intellectually I knew that what I put on my skin is absorbed.  A wise friend once said to me you should never put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t eat.   to eating it.  After all.  Plenty of medications are absorbed via the skin that is how efficient the skin is in absorbing whatever you put on it.

But still living in such a muggy environment in Bali many natural deodorants just didn’t cut the mustard and in the end I chose vanity over health.   As is often the case the big crunch time arrives  is when it comes to your kids.

Having a 9 year old daughter who I knew would soon be needing to wear deodorant I knew there was no way I was going to allow her to use aluminium or chemical based deodorants on her armpits.  I want to educate my girls to avoid putting chemicals on their bodies and directly on to their skin.  Something that I was not taught as child.

The reasons to avoid chemical deodorants.

  1. Many contain aluminium. Aluminium has been linked to Alzheimer’s,  breast cancer and Kidney damage.  While the cancer council claims this has not been 100% proven I am not keen to take the risk.  With lymph nodes sitting right there in the arm pit.   It makes sense to me to keep chemicals in that area to a minimum.

2 . They contain parabens. Research has shown that parabens may interfere with the way your body regulates estrogen.  Breast tissue is very sensitive to estrogen so experts have concerns that if parabens are applied this close to this tissue every day, they may promote the growth of cancer cells.

  1. It’s not the actually the sweat that makes you pong it’s the bacteria on your skin reacting with the sweat. Antiperspirants actually block your sweat glands which is not good for your health.   Many people suggest a pit detox.  Using a natural deodorant will neutralise your PH under your pits leaving you free to sweat but without the pong.

  1. Store bought deodorants usually come in plastic packaging adding to landfill.

SWITCHING TO NATURAL DEODORANT

Did you know that when your swap to a natural deodorant your body goes through a detox phase?   Using antiperspirant daily can alter the bacterial microbiome in your armpits and can cause overproduction of bad bacteria that can make you smellier when you first discontinue.

A 2 to 4 week transition period can be expected when switching from antiperspirant to natural deodorant. For some people, this may seem too scary to embark on, but it is so worth it when you realise that then for the rest of your life, you will have the security of knowing you are making a healthier life choice every single day. Thankfully, there are also a few things you can do to help you get through the detox.

TIPS TO HELP YOU GET THROUGH THE DETOX

  • Eliminate odour-causing bacteria and build-up of toxins in the shower by using a gentle soap.

  • Take hot baths/showers or exercise to help open your pores and encourage sweating to help to flush out toxins.

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing made of natural fibres like cotton, bamboo or linen so your underarms can breathe during the transition

  • Be patient and use your natural deodorant daily.

  • Drink lots of water and cut back on caffeinated drinks.

Our entire family uses Pit Stop deodorant by Shave With Valor.  A Byron Bay based brand that hand make all their products and don’t use any plastic packaging.   I actually never experienced any bad smells while transitioning to this chemical free deodorant  and I love that the packaging is plastic free.

Pit Stop
adjusts the pH level of the skin’s surface, making it unsuitable for bacteria to multiply. Bacteria that break down sweat is what causes odour, not sweat itself. Pit Stop is not an anti-perspirant (which prevents sweating), meaning you can still sweat BUT smell good naturally and stay that way all day, without aluminium or nasty ingredients.

HOW TO USE PIT STOP NATURAL DEODORANT?

Directions:  Get familiar with your pits – Massage a pea-sized amount of Pit Stop Natural Deodorant – Original into your armpit each day or straight after showering (in an emergency, after sweating, and it will neutralise the bad odour).   Pit Stop lasts all day so you don’t need to reapply.
